The effectiveness of control methods for rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa<\/em>) is being assessed across 10 hectares of Ziemupe Nature Reserve.<\/h3>

In this Natura 2000 site, invasive rugosa rose adversely affects primary and secondary dunes, including white dunes and grey dunes covered with herbaceous vegetation. It alters the natural vegetation of open dunes and reduces biodiversity, threatening native species characteristic of these habitats, including specially protected species. In Ziemupe Nature Reserve, rugosa rose suppresses populations of sea holly (Eryngium maritimum<\/em>), an exceptionally rare native plant in Latvia, known for its distinctive appearance. The species has been recorded at only two locations in the country.<\/p>

The work is being led by the project partner, Latvijas valsts me\u017ei (Latvian State Forests).<\/p>

The effectiveness of three control methods is being assessed under Latvian conditions:<\/h3>

\"\" Excavation using hand tools \u2013 in areas where rugosa rose grows in medium-sized patches, including sites where the exceptionally rare and protected sea holly (Eryngium maritimum<\/em>) is found.<\/p>

\"\" Excavation using compact machinery \u2013 in areas where rugosa rose forms dense clumps covering larger, continuous areas.<\/p>

\"\" Targeted burning \u2013 in areas where rugosa rose grows in smaller, less dense clumps or as isolated plants. A control method new to Latvia is being tested: supervised, controlled burning using a specially designed dome to contain the fire and enable individual clumps to be targeted.<\/p>

Controlling rugosa rose is challenging because the plant has a deep root system that can extend several metres into the ground.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
