The experience exchange visit took place at several LIFE-IP ForEst&FarmLand pilot sites where different methods for controlling invasive plant species are being tested. Latvian experts observed measures used to control goldenrods (Solidago spp.), knotweeds (Reynoutria spp.), common snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus) and false spiraea (Sorbaria sorbifolia), including the use of hot steam treatment, covering plants with geotextile and other methods. On the second day of the visit, the experts also visited sites where measures are being implemented to control hogweeds (Heracleum spp.), Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) and the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris).<\/p>\n
Alongside the practical demonstrations, experts from both countries presented their experience in invasive alien species management. The Estonian colleagues introduced the methods tested under the LIFE-IP ForEst&FarmLand project, Estonia\u2019s national regulatory framework and their long-standing experience in monitoring and controlling invasive alien species. The Latvian representatives presented the results of invasive alien species control methods tested under the LatViaNature project and provided an overview of the latest developments in Latvia\u2019s regulatory framework for invasive alien species management.<\/p>\n
Comparing the methods tested under the two projects provided an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of different approaches and identify solutions that could be transferred and adapted to Latvian conditions. The discussions focused in particular on quality control of management measures, the importance of monitoring, landowner engagement and the most effective long-term approaches to controlling invasive alien species.<\/p>\n
The exchange demonstrated that international cooperation is an important prerequisite for successful invasive alien species management. Comparing experience across countries and the results obtained at project pilot sites can help improve control methods, avoid less effective approaches and accelerate the practical implementation of proven solutions.<\/p>\n
The knowledge gained during the visit will contribute to the evaluation of invasive alien species control trials carried out under the LatViaNature project, the development of practical recommendations and further improvements to invasive alien species management in Latvia. Cooperation between the two LIFE Integrated Projects will also continue through the exchange of monitoring results, practical experience and the latest knowledge on invasive alien species management in the Baltic region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
