The Congress provides a platform for scientists, policymakers and conservation practitioners from across Europe to exchange scientific knowledge and discuss the latest data, approaches and developments in biodiversity conservation across different ecosystems.<\/p>\n

J\u0101nis Ozols, an expert with the LatViaNature project, gave a presentation entitled \u2018Linking EU habitat and species protection through Favourable Reference Areas: evidence from threatened saproxylic beetles\u2019 during the session \u2018Forest conservation and old-growth woods\u2019, which focused on forest biodiversity and the conservation of old-growth forests. His presentation explored how achieving nationally established Favourable Reference Areas for forest habitat types of EU importance could contribute to the conservation of threatened saproxylic beetles.<\/p>\n

During the poster session, LatViaNature experts Guntis Br\u016bmelis, J\u0101nis Ozols and Sandra Ikauniece presented \u2018LIFE LatViaNature \u2013 mapping and quality assessment of forest habitats of European importance for conservation solutions\u2019. The poster presented the mapping and quality assessment of forest habitats based on quantitative conservation objectives and Favourable Reference Areas.<\/p>\n

Favourable Reference Areas, established as part of setting quantitative conservation objectives for habitats and species, are scientifically based estimates of the area required to ensure that habitats and species can achieve and maintain a Favourable Conservation Status over the long term.<\/p>\n

This year marked the 8th European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB), organised by the Society for Conservation Biology and Leiden University in cooperation with Hortus botanicus Leiden, Wageningen University & Research and other partners.<\/p>\n
