Home » Pilot site for the control of Himalayan balsam
The effectiveness of control methods for Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is being assessed at five pilot sites covering a total of 17.98 hectares:
Krustkalni Nature Reserve – 0.08 ha
Ķemeri National Park – 3.21 ha
Vecdaugava Nature Reserve – 6.83 ha
Beitāni Hillfort, Rāzna National Park – 7.86 ha
The work is being led by the project partner, Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia.
The effectiveness of five control methods is being assessed under Latvian conditions:
Steam treatment
Grazing by horses
Rotavating the topsoil and overseeding with a competitive plant species (great burdock)
Hand-pulling
Mulching
The effectiveness of control methods will be evaluated at the LatViaNature pilot sites, with the aim of developing science-based guidelines in 2027 for managing invasive alien species elsewhere in Latvia.
