Notice on the Use of Plant Protection Products to Control Invasive Dwarf Serviceberry in Ragakāpa Nature Park

On 3 November 2023, specialists from Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia will use the plant protection product Taifun B to treat the stumps of dwarf serviceberry shrubs with a brush, as part of efforts to control this invasive alien species at a LatViaNature pilot site in Ragakāpa Nature Park. The treatment will cover an area of 0.08 hectares. Temporary access restrictions will be in place at the work site from 3 to 13 November, with the restricted area clearly marked on site.

To protect the wooded coastal dunes habitat of European importance in Ragakāpa Nature Park, the LatViaNature project, implemented by Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia, is carrying out control measures targeting the invasive alien species dwarf serviceberry (Amelanchier spicata) across 33 hectares in the oldest and most biologically valuable part of the park. The project is assessing the effectiveness of various control methods, including the treatment of serviceberry stumps with plant protection products. The findings will be used to develop science-based guidelines for controlling this invasive alien species elsewhere in Latvia.

The control of invasive alien species is designated as a top-priority management measure in the approved Ragakāpa Nature Park Conservation Plan for 2019–2031.

The LatViaNature project, funded by the European Commission’s LIFE Programme, is conducting largest scientific study in Latvia to date on invasive alien species control. The study evaluates control methods for five harmful invasive alien species at 13 pilot sites across Latvia, covering a total area of more than 100 hectares.
