Home » Pilot Site for the Control of Boxelder Maple
The effectiveness of control methods for boxelder maple (Acer negundo) is being assessed at three pilot sites covering a total area of 26.36 hectares:
Krustkalni Nature Reserve – 6.57 ha
Daugavpils – 16.89 ha
Daugavas Loki Nature Park – 2.9 ha
The work is being led by the project partner, Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia.
The effectiveness of six control methods is being assessed under Latvian conditions:
Stump treatment with plant protection products
Removal using hand tools
Trunk girdling
Rotavating and mowing
Frequent strimming of regrowth
Stump mulching
The effectiveness of control methods will be evaluated at the LatViaNature pilot sites, with the aim of developing science-based guidelines in 2027 for managing invasive alien species elsewhere in Latvia.
