Pilot Site for the Control of Canadian Goldenrod

The effectiveness of Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) control methods is being assessed at four pilot sites covering a total area of 22.6 hectares:

In the city of Jēkabpils – 1.96 hectares

In the city of Daugavpils – 11.56 hectares

In Abava Valley Nature Park (Kandava) – 6.15 hectares

In Ķemeri National park – 2.93 hectares

The work is being led by the project partner, the Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia.

The effectiveness of five control methods is being assessed under Latvian conditions:

Mowing at different frequencies (two to three times per growing season)

Rotavating the topsoil, overseeding with a mixture of competitive plant species (cocksfoot and white clover), and mowing

Rotavating the topsoil and mowing

Mulching

Hand-pulling

The effectiveness of control methods will be evaluated at the LatViaNature pilot sites, with the aim of developing science-based guidelines in 2027 for managing invasive alien species elsewhere in Latvia.
