The exhibitions feature plant collections developed over almost a century, enhanced with modern infrastructure to protect and maintain them for future generations. New flower beds, pathways, and a modern irrigation system were created as part of the improvements.
Covering about 4,000 m², the exhibitions feature more than 800 plant species – from health-promoting herbs to poisonous plants native to Latvia – while also highlighting the diversity of plant traits and survival strategies. Both include wild species characteristic of different Latvian habitats, among them indicator species of biologically valuable grasslands, as well as rare and protected plants.

The award, presented for the 27th time by the Latvian Builders Association and the Latvian Association of Civil Engineers, aims to raise the quality of construction by recognizing and promoting the best buildings and good practices in Latvia and abroad. It also supports professional development, showcases excellence, and motivates industry representatives to take on new challenges.
The exhibitions were commissioned by the University of Latvia, with design by “Depo projekts” Ltd. and “Santeko” Ltd., and construction by “Alejas projekti” Ltd.

“Thanks to LatViaNature investments, the Botanical Garden can preserve its century-old plant collections for the next hundred years and beyond, while developing exhibitions in line with Europe’s best practices and offering visitors a modern experience,” says Ieva Saleniece, LatViaNature Project Manager.
Both exhibitions at the University of Latvia Botanical Garden were developed over two years within the LIFE integrated project “Optimizing the Management and Governance of Natura 2000 Protected Areas in Latvia” (LIFE-IP LatViaNature, LIFE19 IPE/LV/000010) which is implemented with the financial support of the LIFE Programme of the European Union and Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development.
